Research Projects

The role of tissue transglutaminase in the pathogenesis of coeliac disease is the principal focus of our research in this disease.   Experiments have focused on the antigenic target of auto-antibodies, the isotype of these antibodies and the expression of the antigen in tissue myofibroblasts.  The research team includes Dr. Greg Byrne and Dr. Jacinta Kelly.

Investigation of primary immunodeficiency disorders is focused on the potential gene responsible for a unique condition characterised by absence of natural killer cells.  Additional studies are examining cell markers which may be used to sub-classify the clinical disorder, Common variable immunodeficiency.  Drs Jean Dunne and Eleanor Wallace are leading these studies.

Dr. Derek Doherty has recently joined the department from Maynooth College. His group are performing studies to examine the role of natural killer cells in the immune system.
