Methods of Assessment

Trinity Term 4th Medical Year.

  1. MCQ paper (Michaelmas) based on 3rd year and term 1 of 4th year
    Format: 40 questions, each with 5 parts. True/False.
    Time Allowed: 1 hour.
    Marking: Correct answer +1 mark.
    Incorrect answer: 0.5 marks.
    Unanswered: 0 marks.
    30 marks.
  2. MCQ paper based on the whole course (3 terms).
    Format: 40 questions, each with 5 parts. True/False.
    Time Allowed: 1 hour.
    Marking:
    Correct answer: +1 mark.
    Incorrect answer: 0.5 marks.
    Unanswered: 0 marks.
    50 marks.
  3. Essay paper.
    Format: 4 questions to be completed in 2 hours from a choice of 6.
    100 marks.
  4. Practical examination.
    20 colour pictures - 10 macroscopic and 10 microscopic specimens for diagnosis and comment.
    Time Allowed: 0.5 hours.
    20 marks.

Viva Voce Examination

Students whose aggregate mark is just below the pass mark will be required to attend for a pass/fail viva when a pass may be obtained if sufficient merit is shown.

Students whose aggregate mark is just below the 2nd class or 1st class honours level will be invited to attend for a viva when 2nd class honours or 1st class honours may be obtained respectively, provided that sufficient merit is shown.

Grades

  • 70% and over: 1st class honours.
  • 60-69%: 2nd class honours.
  • 50-59%: Pass.
  • Less than 50%: Fail.

Supplemental examination for 4th medical year is held in September. The format is as for the Trinity Term.
