Infections in immunocompromised patients

Patients undergoing stem cell transplantation represent the most immunocompromised group in any hospital. The combination of prolonged neutropenia, inhibition of T-cell function by agents such as cyclosporin and the mucositis caused by cytotoxic conditioning agents combine to render patients susceptible to a wide range of bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens. New strategies for anti-fugal prophylaxis and diagnosis are being developed and diagnosis are being developed in conjunction with Professor Tom Rogers in the Department of Clinical Microbiology.
