Electives
A limited number of undergraduate medical students can be accepted for clinical electives between May and August each year. Applications for electives at other times of the year will not be accepted.
Electives are 4 weeks in duration. It is advised that students indicate their preferred dates and also alternative dates, as preferred dates may be unavailable. Requests for elective periods greater than 4 weeks will not be accommodated.
Students may undertake an elective period of study in departments based in teaching hospitals affiliated with the TCD School of Medicine – St. James’s Hospital (SJH) or the Adelaide and Meath Hospital incorporating the National Children’s Hospital (AMiNCH) at Tallaght. Acceptance of students on elective is at the discretion of the relevant Head of Department.
Departments accepting applications for electives in summer 2011 include:
Medicine (Gastroenterology, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Medicine for the Elderly, Rheumatology, Endocrinology and Renal Medicine, ENT)
Surgery (Ophthalmology, Anaesthesia, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Radiology, Vascular Surgery)
Clinical Microbiology
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Pathology
Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Psychiatry
Public Health and Primary care
Applications for electives will be accepted from December 1st to April 30th each year. Interested students are advised to apply as early as possible as places are limited.
An administrative fee of €75 will be charged to students who are offered an elective place. Details of the payment will be sent to successful applicants by email. Students who are not offered an elective place will not be charged an administrative fee.
