Medical Humanities

Year 1 students at a visit to the DailFollowing a successful pilot program  in 2009/10, first year medical students are participating in an exciting new development, the student selected module in the Medical Humanities.
Students have the choice of doing Art, Philosophy, Literature, Creative Writing, Film, Advocacy, Perception, History, Language and a number of Ethics modules all in the context of Medicine.

It is intended that the humanities will act as a complimentary strand to the scientific approach in achieving the outcome of a humane doctor.

All the areas are aimed at novice level and a climate is fostered where ideas can be exchanged and challenged in a safe, non-threatening environment.

Student participation is a central theme and most modules include a field trip, these include Art Galleries, a Drug Rehabilitation Centre, History Museums and even the Dail.

The feedback so far is encouraging, students see it as a break from their usual studies but they also comment on a “widening of their perspective” and a broadening of understanding.
