The Postgraduate Research Day was held on Monday 19th September 2011. This years Postgraduate Research day was different to other years in that it was a joint symposium with the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology and the Department of Pharmacology, University of Michigan. Furthermore the event was held in the recently opened Biomedical Sciences Institute on Pearse Street which is the new home for the School of Medicine. Professor Kelleher (Head of the School of Medicine and Vice Provost for Medical Affairs) and Professor Bishr Omary (Chair of Molecular and Integrative Physiology University of Michigan) opened the proceedings and in their addresses they provided an insight into the origins of the collaboration between the two institutions. The first guest lectures by Professor Geoffrey Murphy (University of Michigan explored on The Role of L-Type Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels in Neuronal function and Cognition. With over 90 abstracts submitted the oral and poster presentations spanned the full range of research activity, Neuroscience, Molecular and Clinical Sciences, Population Health and Physical Medicine in the School of Medicine and in the departments from the University of Michigan. Professor Jessica Schwartz concluded proceedings with a lecture on the Hormonal regulation of gene transcription. The Guest lectures by Professors Murphy and Schwartz from the University of Michigan provided an excellent insight into the ongoing research in their institution. Congratulations to Mr Victor Cazares Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, University of Michigan and Ms Suzanne McCreddon, Department of Physiology, Trinity College on their awards of best Oral Presentation and best Poster respectively. Finally thank you to all involved in the organization of a stimulating, informative and enjoyable day.
