Musculoskeletal Research

A number of new projects in the area of musculoskeletal research are currently underway, strengthening the School of Medicine’s commitment in this area. Research in international rowing continues to build on the body of research formed to date through collaboration with the Department of Bioengineering and Dr Fiona Wilson (Discipline of Physiotherapy). Fiona Wilson is now part of a research group within the international rowing body ‘FISA’ which is in the process of setting up a large scale study of injury in international rowers.

Dr Fiona Wilson along with Prof. Gaye Cunnane, Dr Laura Durkan and Dr Barry O’Shea (Department of Rheumatology, St James’s Hospital) and Dr Ciaran Johnston (Department of Radiology, St James’s Hospital) are collaborating with Munster Rugby, examining patellar tendon disorders in elite rugby players. This study will be part of ongoing research with Munster Rugby which will also include examination of head and neck impact forces in association with the Department of Bioengineering.

The Discipline of Physiotherapy has recently commenced a prospective study with Dr Ray Moran and Dr Mark Jackson, orthopaedic surgeons at the Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC) in Santry. The project will examine factors which influence return to sport after Anterior Cruciate Ligament repair and will continue over the next 18 months.
