HRB Project Award

Dr Anne Molloy, Department of Clinical Medicine, has received a Health Research Board project award towards carrying out a Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) on neural tube defects (NTDs). NTDs, which include spina bifida and anencephaly, are among the most common severe congenital malformations and are of special interest in Ireland where the prevalence at birth has traditionally been high. The GWAS will require DNA samples from thousands of affected families world-wide. Because these birth defects are rare, no single research group has the DNA resources to complete such a study and the formation of an international consortium is required. Dr. Molloy will coordinate this international effort with co-applicants Dr. Larry Brody of the US National Human Genome Research Institute and Dr. Alex Bassuk at the University of Iowa, USA.
