Photographer Fionn McCann - General Practice Photography Event

General Practice Photographic Exhibition

The official opening of this exhibition will be on Tuesday 15th May at 6.30pm 2012.  It will be launched by Dr Leo Varadkar, who will be introduced by the Provost and the exhibition will continue until 27th May 2012. This exhibition marks the closing event of the tercentenary celebrations of the Medical School of Trinity College Dublin. It is the inspiration of the Professor of General Practice, Tom O’Dowd, who commissioned Fionn McCann as photographer. It highlights the vital role of GPs in contemporary Irish society, providing a glimpse into the usually private interactions between GP and patient, capturing the trials, tribulations and sometimes humour of these encounters. Through the sensitivity of McCann’s lens, the frontline work of GPs is revealed in all its diversity. In the consulting room or on home visits, the GP may be called upon to medicate, to perform procedures or simply to explain and reassure. Above all, the confessional quality of the patient-GP encounter, where listening to the patient’s concerns is of prime importance, is underlined. Made between 2009 and 2011, the work documents a series of patients’ visits to six General Practitioners throughout Ireland. The GPs and the featured patients gave permission to have Mr McCann present during these normally private encounters and the project was ethically approved by the Irish College of General Practitioners.

The Trinity College Dublin School of Medicine was the beneficiary of a donation from the charity, The Hospital Saturday Fund, at a special event in the Mansion House in Dublin recently.

Pictured at the event was Professor Dermot Kelleher receiving the donation on behalf of the Trinity College Dublin School of Medicine from The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Andrew Montague, Vice-President of the Hospital Saturday Fund.

The TCD School of Medicine educates and trains over 800 medical students annually. Third and fourth year students are awarded credit for 8 weeks spent in clinical elective posts overseas, which allow students to broaden their international experience and learn valuable life-long skills. The donation from the Hospital Saturday Fund will help support students who are restricted from doing an elective overseas due to financial constraints.

Professor Martina HennessyIn 2011, the Hospital Saturday Fund gave €550,000 in donations and grants to medical charities for care and research, hospices and hospitals across Ireland and the UK. Assistance was also given to individuals whose illness or disability has caused financial difficulties.

The charity’s trading company, HSF Health Plan has been operating in Ireland for over 60 years.

Superbugs - A Play

A Play - Stopping the Spread of Superbugs

The Society for General Microbiology (SGM) held its Spring meeting at the CCD Dublin. The SGM is proactive in promoting microbiology to the public, thus a public event "Stopping the Spread of Superbugs" was staged. Stephen Smith from the School of Medicine is a committee member  of the Society and facilitated the staging of the play. Local actors, Shona McDonald and Claire Blennerhassett, were recruited from TCD drama studies and they were ably directed by Christina Matthews (a TCD drama studies graduate). The play centered around the two hospital cleaners, Lizzie and Carla, and the plight of Carla's mother who may have contracted MRSA in hospital. The four acts of the play were interspersed by Q and A with the audience. Indeed, the audience could vote on questions, posed by an expert panel, using Red/Green "ready steady cook" cards! Approximately 400 people attended the event which was held in the stunning surroundings of the Auditorium CCD. The play was written and conceived by SGM staff and Dr Anthony Hilton (Aton University). The play was mentioned on BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-17563748

Valve Measurement in the Intestine – A First for TAGG Medical Innovation Institute at Trinity Health Ireland.

Flip Procedure ImageJanuary 2012 at Tallaght Hospital marked a new venture in valve measurement in the large intestine. The Trinity Academic Gastroenterology Group (TAGG) led by Prof. Deirdre McNamara and Dr. Barry McMahon successfully placed an EndoFLIP probe across the junction between the ceacum and the ileum. Using a distensibility protocol and the functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) developed by Dr. McMahon, the interdisciplinary team have proved categorically that this junction does indeed behave like a valve. The ethics approved novel procedure was quite technical and involved developing a reliable method for accurate placement of the probe under endoscopic visualisation and precise positioning and timing of distensibility readings.

Prof. McNamara stated “this is the first time this technique has been used in the ileoceacal valve, it has the potential to become the first routine clinical test of ileocecal valve function. Enhanced awareness of the role of the valve could assist our understanding of various disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.”

Gas 2012Prof. McNamara and Dr. McMahon have recently set up a Medical Innovation Institute under TAGG with the objective of identifying clinical needs, designing appropriate devices to meet the clinical need and translating these innovations into clinical practice through high quality translational research programmes. The Institute acts as a research hub for innovations from outside the group, by offering opportunities to adapt and apply devices in a quality research environment.
